The 7 Best Watches of the Week, From Brad Pitt’s IWC to Ryan Reynolds’s Omega

Apparently, winners wear Richard Mille. Formula 1 racer Oscar Piastri showed off the Swiss watchmaker’s RM 67-02 after taking first place in the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, while British cyclist Mark Cavendish flaunted the same timepiece as he claimed a record-breaking 35th career Tour de France stage in Saint-Vulbas on the same day. It makes sense given that Richard Mille creates lightweight yet hardwearing pieces that can withstand the most taxing of athletic endeavors, like, say, a bike race through the rolling hills of France.

Actors, on the other hand, donned elegant dress watches this week. Brad Pitt flexed a custom IWC at the Hungarian GP, Ryan Reynolds showed off an Omega Speedmaster on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and Chris Hemsworth sported a Rolex Submariner at a Transformers One screening. Colman Domingo and Chris Pratt followed suit, rocking stylish pieces by Cartier and Panerai, respectively.

Brad Pitt: IWC Ingenieur SL

Brad Pitt’s IWC was the real winner of the Hungarian Grand Prix. Launched in 1976, the Ingenieur SL (Ref. 1832) was designed by the late, great Gérald Genta. (The Swiss watchmaker is also behind the Patek Philippe Nautilus, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, and the Pasha de Cartier.) Referred to as the “Jumbo” by collectors, the sports watch showcases a large, 40 mm case, a grid-decorated dial, a screw-on bezel, and an integrated H-link bracelet. IWC unveiled a modern Ingenieur at Watches & Wonders in 2023, but Pitt’s is a 1970s original. Even more impressive, the one-off features a custom green dial that never appeared in IWC’s catalog. The contemporary iteration is available in a slightly different shade of green for $11,700.

Oscar Piastri: Richard Mille RM 67-02

Oscar Piastri’s first F1 victory on Sunday may have been slightly surprising, but his watch choice certainly wasn’t. The McLaren driver fittingly showed off a timepiece by team sponsor Richard Mille at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The Swiss watchmaker designed this particular RM 67-02 specifically for drivers in the McLaren team. The special edition features a 38.7 mm tonneau-shaped case in black Carbon TPT and a skeletonized dial with orange accents. (Orange and black are the team’s colors, of course.) At the center lies a self-winding movement (CRMA7) that beats at a frequency of 4Hz and offers a power reserve of 50 hours. The caliber is just 3.4 mm thick and made of lightweight titanium. The timepiece itself weighs just 32 grams, making it the lightest automatic model in the Richard Mille lineup. You can’t get this specific McLaren-themed example, but a regular RM 67-02 retails for $205,000.

Colman Domingo: Cartier Tank Must

Colman Domingo usually dons Omegas on the red carpet, but the Rustin star sported a Cartier at the SiriusXM Studios this week. The timepiece is a contemporary riff on the Parisian jeweler’s iconic Tank from 1917, with a 33.7 mm steel case, a silvered dial, and an interchangeable steel bracelet. Contrasting all that gray is a beaded crown set with a synthetic cabochon-shaped spinel and sword-shaped, blued-steel hands. Other classic Tank hallmarks include the familiar Roman numerals and the brand’s signature rail-track with a minute scale. The entry-level Tank Must is priced at a relatively modest $3,850.

Chris Hemsworth: Rolex Submariner Date

Chris Hemsworth has an enviable assortment of Audemars Piguet Royal Oaks, but decided to wear a Rolex Submariner Date to a special screening of Transformers One this week. The Thor star opted for quite possibly the most classic Sub configuration: a 41 mm case in 18-karat yellow gold, a matching gold Oyster bracelet, a black Cerachrom bezel, and a complementary black dial. The watch is kind of similar to a Transformer in that the graduated bezel rotates so that a diver can accurately and safely monitor diving time and decompression stops. You can pick one up for $45,000.

Mark Cavendish: Richard Mille RM 67-02

Mark Cavendish is not an official brand ambassador for Richard Mille, but he is certainly a fan of the Swiss watchmaker. The legendary British cyclist wore an RM 67-02 as he claimed a record-breaking 35th career Tour de France stage in Saint-Vulbas on Sunday. The watch appears to be the same special edition Oscar Piastri was rocking at the GP. Richard Mille reportedly made the piece exclusively for the McLaren Formula 1 team, but perhaps Cavendish called in a favor. Richard Mille has released many iterations of the piece in honor of star athletes, such as French Alpine skier Alexis Pinturault, South African sprinter Wayde Van Niekerk, and Qatari high jumper Mutaz Essa Barsham. Perhaps Cavendish will get his own one day, too.

Chris Pratt: Panerai Luminor Marina

American actor Chris Pratt wore a perfectly understated Panerai timepiece to see Marvel President Kevin Feige get his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Nobody wants to upstage the man of the hour, after all. Pratt, who is an ambassador for the Italian watchmaker, opted for a sleek steel Luminor Marina (PAM01564) for the occasion. The watch features a 44 mm case, bezel, and bracelet in brushed steel and a clean white dial. In addition to luminous Arabic numerals and hour markers, the face is adorned with a date display at three o’clock and a small seconds subdial at nine o’clock. The steely wrist candy will set you back $9,500.

Ryan Reynolds: Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch

Ryan Reynolds has stepped up his watch game on the press tour for Deadpool & Wolverine. The Canadian actor, who usually wears a low-key Apple watch, rocked an Omega Speedmaster on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Introduced in 2022, the flashy Moonwatch is inspired by the fourth-generation Speedmaster. Priced at $42,600, the watch showcases a 42 mm case in 18-karat Moonshine Gold, a sun-brushed green PVD “step” dial, and a green ceramic bezel with a tachymeter scale. It also features a manual-winding chronograph movement and is master chronometer certified. We can’t say the same for the Apple watch.
