Mum’s genius hack to get stains out of dining chairs

Grubby hands and feet are part of being a kid, but luckily, one Aussie mum has found a hack to clean the grime her sons leave behind – and as her photos reveal, it works a treat.

Caroline had seen other parents using denture cleaner to scrub their floors, ovens and microwaves, and decided to give it a go on her dining room chairs after failing to get the stains out with other, more traditional, cleaning methods.

“I’ve been sceptical about using Polident as I’ve read others post about how it would damage fabric due to the chemicals used, but I was desperate to find something to clean my chairs,” she tells Yahoo Lifestyle.

“I figured if I made sure I hosed them down really well, I wouldn’t have a problem, so I gave it a go, and it’s worked better than I thought!”

Caroline mixed three denture cleaner tablets in around 600ml of boiling water and sprayed the chairs liberally. She let it sit for five minutes, then scrubbed at the stains with a microfibre cloth before hosing them down.

She was extremely impressed by the results and laughs, “My next target is my couch!”

Her before and after photos elicited a strong response on Facebook, with many other parents saying they wanted to try it. While some shared their own success stories, others confessed it didn’t work as well for them.

Meanwhile, Perth mum Tara Martinovich, followed advice to use the $6 product to scrub the grease from her oven and microwave.

“My microwave had become quite dirty after having children that love to cook nachos and the like without a cover,” she tells Yahoo Lifestyle, “We all know how much mess that can make, and I admit I let it slide for a while.”

At first, she tried putting in a bowl of water and vinegar and letting it steam before going in and cleaning, but was disappointed with the results, so she turned to denture cleaner.

“I have been seeing all the great results on the Facebook page, Mums who Clean, from people cleaning with Polident, so while I was shopping I grabbed some – I actually bought Sterident,” she says.

In a spray bottle, she mixed three of the tablets with 740mL of hot water until it dissolved, then sprayed her microwave and let it sit for five minutes.

“To my amazement with a simple wipe all the food and grime just effortlessly wiped off,” Tara explains.

“I was so shocked at how well it worked. I started to clean my oven to really see how well it worked and got amazing results from that also. I can’t wait to see what else I can try and clean.”

Suz Wenzel, a small business owner from Brisbane, also tried the hack on her tiled floors with just as impressive a result.

“I was sceptical at first seeing the pics from the previous posters in the [Facebook] group, but was completely surprised at the difference between the cleaned grout and what was there before,” she tells Yahoo Lifestyle.

“I honestly believed the grout colour was grey! For a $6 cleaner, $3 grout brush from Woollies, a roll of paper towel and some time from me, it was such little outlay for a big result.”
