This $3.9 Million Home Is Just Off L.A.’s Famed Mulholland Drive

High in the mansion-strewn mountains above Beverly Hills and just below Mulholland Drive, which makes a famous run along the winding ridge of L.A.’s Santa Monica Mountains from its eastern terminus at the Cahuenga Pass in Hollywood all the way to Encino, a contemporary residence squirreled down Java Drive offers hillside tranquility and open views in a contemporary residence now available for $3.875 million. Sam Plouchart and Tom Wrigglesworth of Sotheby’s International Realty—Beverly Hills Brokerage hold the listing.

Built in the late 1940s and extensively updated since, the two-bedroom, two-bath home sits behind an artistic wooden gate that swings open to a wide, cobblestone driveway that slopes down to a two-car showcase garage with a glass-fronted roll-up door. One wall of the garage is a bank of windows that slide open to expose the space to the deck, and a lofted area serves as a lounge and workout area.

Inside the 2,400-square-foot home, there is a mix of polished concrete and bamboo flooring and disappearing walls of glass that provide an easy back and forth with a huge deck that hangs over the canyon with sweeping mountaintop vistas.

The open-plan great room has a simple fireplace on its back wall and a sleek kitchen with a compact footprint and a smart configuration that incorporates a cantilevered snack bar on the center island, two ovens and a glass cabinet for displaying dishware and other culinary items while at the same time keeping them dust-free.

Just off the living area is a cozily proportioned study and a corridor that leads to the secondary bedroom and guest bath as well as the primary suite. Glass sliders link the primary bedroom to a secluded, pea gravel patio set against a naturalistic wall of foliage, while the adjoining bathroom includes an unexpected pop of color: a lime green vanity countertop.

The huge deck that runs along the back of the house was built around a couple of trees that provide shade. Just outside the study, there’s a “cowboy pool”—a circular, trough-like metal container filled with cool water—that’s positioned to take in the open, tree-framed views over the mountains.
