1929
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences hosted its first awards ceremony on May 16, 1929 in a banquet hall at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.
There were 270 guests in attendance. The price to be amongst the leading stars of the time? Only $5, which would be approximately $93 today.
