"The Ending Wrecks Me": Here Are 21 Romantic Movies That Are So Good, But Also Absolutely Soul-Crushing
Recently, we asked the BuzzFeed Community to tell us which romance movies are devastating, but are still worth watching. Here are 21 of their top responses:
There are obviously MASSIVE spoilers ahead for several movies!
1.First, The Notebook (2004)
"The first time I watched it, I was 16, and my parents were going through a divorce, and my grandmother had been diagnosed with dementia. I had been questioning lasting love and how our memories work. I saw Noah wait seven years, mourning a fling with a girl from his town. I saw him build her dream house. I saw him hold onto her as her memory faded into nothing. I saw him hold her hand as they both breathed their last breath. I cried and cried and cried. Every time I watch that movie, I can’t escape it. I’m put back in that year, of being 16, lost and heartbroken, and watching this incredible movie make me feel things I didn’t know I could feel."
2.La La Land (2016)
"I would have to say La La Land. What a sad and realistic ending. My heart ripped to pieces."
3.Blue Valentine (2010)
"Ryan Gosling can do no wrong, and I just love it when he rips out my heart and stomps on it."
4.All of Us Strangers (2023)
"A recently watched one from me: All of Us Strangers. Beautifully shot, heartbreakingly acted, and just, overall...broke my heart. I wouldn't unsee it for the world, though."
5.The Time Traveler's Wife (2009)
"Honestly, The Time Traveler's Wife broke my heart. I had read the book, but even so, I sobbed like a baby. It's terrible to know what happens to the Time Traveler ahead of time. Even then, you're unprepared for it. That being said, it's a beautiful movie."
6.Moonlight (2016)
"Such a beautiful film, filled with amazing acting."
7.Remember Me (2010)
"Two characters who were hurting and found each other. Only for one to die just when they began to make amends and try to move forward with their lives. Devastating."
8.Revolutionary Road (2008)
"It is the only romance film that has made me cry."
9.Carol (2015)
"Very bittersweet."
10.Past Lives (2023)
"I sobbed, and it wasn’t the typical emotionally manipulative plot that is obviously designed to make you cry like A Star Is Born (nothing against A Star Is Born; that’s just the first example that came to mind)."
11.Atonement (2007)
"The ending wrecks me."
12.Ghost (1990)
"My favorite sad romance movie is Ghost, starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. It doesn't get much sadder as I hear the strains of 'Unchained Melody' echo in my head.
13.P.S. I Love You (2007)
"P.S. I Love You wrecked me from start to finish."
14.Like Water For Chocolate (1992)
"It is one of my favorite movies (and books), but the ending is devastating! It’s made in Spanish and tells the story of Tita and her love, Pedro. Being the last of three daughters, Tita’s mother demands she never marry, never have children, and live her life as her mother’s caretaker. When her mother denies Pedro’s request to marry Tita, Pedro makes a drastic choice that will alter the course of not only their lives but also that of Tita’s sisters and others they come into contact with. The most important element of the story is cooking. Tita lives and loves through her cooking, and her emotions can have a powerful effect on those who eat her food. If you like the movie, read the book! It even includes the recipes for the most beautiful Mexican food you will ever try."
15.Brokeback Mountain (2005)
"As much as it breaks my heart to watch, it’s worth seeing the love they have for each other. Especially since it was one of the first of its kind to show two men in love like that on screen."
16.Moulin Rouge! (2001)
"Just a stunning film from start to finish."
17.Five Feet Apart (2019)
"Five Feet Apart ruined me."
18.The Fountain (2006)
"It’s a portrait of love against all odds across different times, and while it’s emotionally devastating, there’s so much beauty and hope as well."
19.Me Before You (2016)

20.Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)
"That moment at the end with the portrait and the page number?! Chills. Fully sobbed. I cry every time I rewatch this movie, too."
21.And finally, A Walk to Remember (2002)
"A Walk to Remember is such a beautiful story, and it hits hard twice!! First when Landon hugs his dad, and then at the end. But it is SO worth it — fantastic movie!"
