21 Horses Dead Following Florida Barn Fire, Investigation Ongoing

A barn fire in Marion County, Florida resulted in the deaths of 21 horses.

In the early hours of Tuesday, April 8, a security guard at Roberts Quarter Horses saw a barn on the property had caught fire, local station WCJB reported. The guard called 911 just before 4 a.m., and by the time authorities arrived at 4:11 a.m., the barn's roof had collapsed.

All 21 horses inside — including Reba, Cadillac, Drama, Spot and Jolene — were confirmed dead, Roby Roberts, the owner, told authorities.

No humans were harmed in the fire, and crews were able to get the flames under control in about an hour.

Roberts Quarter Horses is owned by the Roberts Family — who also owns the World Equestrian Center, the largest horse complex in the country.

“We are aware of a tragic incident that occurred on private property personally owned by the individuals who also own World Equestrian Center," WEC wrote in a statement shared with WCJB. "While the private property is entirely separate from and not affiliated with World Equestrian Center business or operations, we extend our deepest sympathies to those affected."

An investigation into the fire is underway, WCJB reported. Roberts reportedly suspects the fire was an accident caused by a fan or golf cart, though the State Fire Marshal's office has yet to name the cause of the fire.
