20 Movie And TV Characters Who Went From Pretty Beloved To...The Worst

First impressions aren't everything! You can be charmed by a fictional character right off the bat, but then realize they might not be the kind of person you thought they were.

So we recently asked the BuzzFeed Community to share which TV and film characters they think went from universally loved to kind of...the worst. Here are some of their responses:

1.Dean from Gilmore Girls:

"He was so sweet and such a good boyfriend to Rory at the beginning of Season 1! But then he started yelling at her and saying things that were just so offhand. I hate him so much."

2.Rory from Gilmore Girls:

Rory and Dean kiss, then later Lorelai reminds her Dean is married and Rory says "he's my dean" and Lorelai says "he's not your dean; he's lindsay's dean"
The WB

"Rory became worse in the later seasons. She starts as a girl focused on school and reaching her goals. But eventually, she meets Logan, gets told she doesn't have what it takes to achieve her dreams, steals a boat, drops out, and fights with Lorelai. She continues trying to convince herself that the reason she dropped out doesn't have anything to do with her internship, parties with Logan, and living with her grandparents until Jess comes along and tells her to get her shit together. Did the writers even know the girl from Seasons 1 through 4?"

3.Shauna Shipman from Yellowjackets:

Showtime / Everett Collection

"At first, I tried to sympathize with her with her whole 'unpopular and shy girl' schtick, but come Season 3, she's turned into a totally egocentric person in both timelines. Specifically, in the past timeline, she has become such a psychotic sadist to the point that I can't sympathize with her anymore. Like, yeah, it's traumatic you lost your baby and best friend, but it doesn't justify the fact you are a two-faced abusive bully. I lost all my respect and sympathy for her after Ben's demise and her abuse towards Natalie. I just wish they'd explain what really made her like this."

4.Albus Dumbledore from Harry Potter:

"In the later films, he was never there when Harry or anyone else needed him. He was really reckless around Hogwarts. Like no, that school was not safe. He was raising Harry like a pig for slaughter. He was also really full of himself and allowed students to yell slurs at each other and just casually beat each other up."

5.Owen Hunt from Grey's Anatomy:

Owen yelling at Cristina because he thinks everything is always about her.
ABC

"Initially, I loved him, but quickly it became very clear that he was the worst character on the show — and that's saying something, considering how many characters have been on Grey's. He doesn't bring anything to the show besides whining and screaming at the women in his life. I stopped watching after Season 14 because the show stopped being interesting for me a while ago, but maybe I would have kept watching without Owen."

6.Sabrina from The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina:

Person with wind-blown hair holding a box, wearing a textured top, gazing upwards in a dramatic setting
Netflix / Everett Collection

"She was a badly written and poorly acted character, but ultimately, Sabrina just became a colossal arse."

7.Nathan Shelley from Ted Lasso:

"I'm all for lifting others to help them become more confident like Ted did with him in the first season, but Nate's subsequent tendency to be horrible to others when he feels low and inability to laugh at himself made me so upset. To this day, I'm having trouble finishing the show. I will at some point, but too much time is dedicated to what feels like an incredibly petty villain origin story."

8.Debbie Gallagher from Shameless:

Debbie tells Fiona that she intentionally lied to her boyfriend so he'd get her pregnant.
Showtime

"My sister watched Shameless, and on her behalf, I'll say Debbie. She was a smart kid who, despite living a shit life and having a shot at one day improving her life, decided to get pregnant as a teenager and baby trap her boyfriend. Fiona told her it was dumb, but Debbie insisted, then acted shocked that having a baby was hard and got mad at others for not helping her out despite her being so insistent on knowingly getting pregnant."

"If you didn’t read the books, you probably missed it, but it’s his fault Prim died. It was his (and Beety's) idea for the parachute bombs."

10.Cassie Howard from Euphoria:

A person with long hair is visibly upset, mouth open and eyes teary, possibly screaming or crying, in a dramatic scene from a movie or TV show
HBO / Via youtube.com

"It was heartbreaking to watch the way she was used and treated, but sadly, she ended up turning into someone who mistreated her friends."

11.Mike Wheeler from Stranger Things:

"He just became insufferable, whiny, and so controlling over El. Also, the way he was rude to Hopper in his own home was infuriating."

14.Nancy from Weeds:

"I think I was a bad person."
Showtime

"I loved the first few seasons of Weeds, but Nancy Botwin was a mess and a terrible human. I can excuse her behavior initially, but damn."

15.Emma from Once Upon a Time:

Person holding a sword, wearing a textured high-collared jacket, in a dramatic scene with two people in the background
ABC/Courtesy Everett Collection

"I liked her character at the beginning of the series. But towards the end, I was tired of all the savior mess. I was also tired of Snow and David's storyline by the end. They did better at redeeming the bad guys — like Gold, Regina, and Hook — and turning the evil into people we loved."

16.Dre Johnson from Black-ish:

Dre yells at Bow because he thinks she always wants to be right.
ABC

"I HATE Dre from Black-ish. My brother watches this show religiously, and while I haven’t seen the show all the way through, I’ve definitely seen enough to know that Dre is just a straight-up horrible person. In the beginning, his whole 'I’m a bad dad and husband' thing was tolerable. But now he’s just totally unbearable. He’s a terrible husband to Bow. He’s also a really crappy dad. Instead of lifting his kids up and making them feel empowered, he puts them down to save himself from being embarrassed. I’m convinced that Bow and the kids would be WAY better off without him."

ellaelaine

17.Courtney from Total Drama:

Animated character with short hair waves, standing outdoors in front of a lake and hills
Cartoon Network

"I used to think she was pretty funny in the beginning. Then it went kinda downhill in Action and got worse in World Tour. She was just so bossy and mean to everyone, even to Chris."

18.Felicity from Arrow:

Three actors in a dramatic scene: one in a leather jacket, another in a sweater and glasses, and a third in a leather jacket, standing inside
The CW/Courtesy Everett Collection

"She’s fun in the first two seasons because of the awkwardness she has around Oliver, but then the show’s writers treat her as if she can do no wrong."

19.Castiel in Supernatural:

Person in a trench coat extends arm dramatically, as if reaching or casting a spell, in a scene from a TV or movie
CW Network/Courtesy Everett Collection

"He's supposed to be Sam and Dean's best friend, yet he never listens, he's selfish and inconsiderate, he manipulates any and everyone if it suits him, and, for being an angel, his powers never seem to work when the brothers actually need him!"

20.Ross Geller from Friends:

Scene from Friends with Ross and Rachel sitting on a couch. Text on screen questions a male nanny's sexuality
NBC

"At first he comes off as just some guy who has a crush on a girl, but quickly he becomes controlling in his relationship and honestly every other aspect of his life."
