17-Year-Old Girl Dies from 'Serious Shark Bite' Within 100 Yards of Popular Tourist Beach: Reports

A teenage girl was fatally injured while swimming near Bribie Island on Monday, Feb. 3, according to reports

A teenage girl has reportedly died following a shark attack at a popular tourist beach in Australia.

The Queensland Ambulance Service responded to a “serious shark bite incident” involving the 17-year-old victim at Woorim Beach, north of Brisbane, at around 4:45 p.m. local time on Monday, Feb. 3, according to a post on X.

Queensland Police said the teenage girl suffered life-threatening upper body injuries after being bitten by a shark as she swam by Bribie Island, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

While paramedics and witnesses attempted to save the teenage girl, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the outlet.

The unidentified victim was bitten on the arm around 100 yards offshore from Bribie Island, Nine News reported.

No one else was injured in the attack, according to reports.

The area where the incident took place is a spot where drumlines are used to monitor and catch sharks, per The Sydney Morning Herald. It has not been confirmed if the shark was drawn into the area with bait before the attack.

The outlet stated that a coroner report is being prepared for the victim.

Woorim Beach is a popular surfing and tourist location and there were people on the beach at the time of the attack, according to reports.

Moreton Bay councilor Mark Booth wrote in response to the incident on Facebook, “I’m very saddened to hear today, that a shark attack at Woorim Beach on Bribie Island has tragically claimed the life of a 17-year-old girl. 🥺”

“Our hearts break for her family and friends during this unimaginable time. May they find strength and comfort in the support of their loved ones and the community ❤️‍🩹," he concluded.
