12 Records Taylor Swift Could Break (or Tie) Tonight at the 2024 VMAs

Get ready for the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards! This epic fan-voted celebration of music and artistry honors the best videos of the past year.

Referred to the Super Bowl for Youth, the MTV VMAs have alway had a no-holds-barred, anything-can-happen vibe. We’re talking Justin Bieber weeping while singing "Where Are U Now,” a twerking Miley Cyrus with Robin Thicke, a sultry Britney Spears singing "I'm a Slave 4 U" with a giant albino python on her shoulders, Beyoncé rubbing her baby bump showing she was expecting, Lady Gaga’s meat dress, that passionate kiss between Madonna and Britney Spears and many more.

This year’s MTV VMAs will be broadcast live at 8 p.m. ET Wednesday, Sept. 11 from UBS Arena, the home of the New York Islanders hockey team. The show was actually bumped from Sept. 10 so it wouldn't compete with the second presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.

While she’s not slated to perform on the night after she endorsed Harris for president, all eyes will be on Taylor Swift, the most nominated artist this year with 12—eight nods for her “Fortnight” music video plus nods in the artist of the year, best pop and social categories song of summer and most iconic performance categories.

As if being a 14-time Grammy-winning billionaire pop artist wasn't enough, Swift's whirlwind romance with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has sent her fandom to a new level. Swifties are watching NFL games and NFL fans are learning more than they want to know about pop music. People cannot get enough of them.

The big question heading into the VMAs is whether Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce will attend the VMAs.

Fans hoping to see the couple make their first red carpet appearance together at the VMAs. Just this past Sunday they attended the US Open to watch the men's final between Jannik Sinner and Taylor Fritz at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The US Open is a mere 13 miles from the UBS Arena where the VMAs will be held.

So will Kelce be there for his lady love? We don’t know for sure. But we do know Taylor Swift could make history again this year at the VMAs. If she wins Video of the Year, she will make history as the first artist to win that category five times. Plus, she could very well break a handful of other VMA records.

VMA Records Taylor Swift Could Break in 2024

1. Video of the Year

If Taylor Swift wins Video of the Year, she will make history as the first artist to win the night's biggest award five times. She has already won Video of the Year for “Bad Blood,” “You Need to Calm Down,” “All Too Well: The Short Film” and “Anti-Hero.”

2. Most VMA wins

Taylor Swift could best Beyoncé in total VMA wins, but a new record is anything but guaranteed. Beyoncé has 30 total VMAs—26 solo awards and four for her collaboration with Destiny's Child and Jay-Z. Swift comes into the 2024 show with 23 awards and 10 nominations this year. That puts Swift in range of breaking or tying the record, but Queen Bey is also nominated for three VMAs. Who will hold the record at the end of the night depends on how many awards each wins.

3. Most awards won in one show

Peter Gabriel's 37-year-old record for most awards won in one show could fall tonight as Taylor Swift is nominated for 12 awards. In 1987, Gabriel won 10 awards—nine for “Sledgehammer” plus the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

4. Video of the Year streak

In 2022 and 2023, Swift won Video of the Year for “All Too Well: The Short Film" and ”AntiHero,” respectively. If she wins Video of the Year this year, Swift will be the first artist to win the category three years in a row.

5. Artist of the Year streak

No one in VMA's history has won Artist of the Year two years in a row. If Taylor Swift, who won last year, wins again, she will make history.

6. Most Best Pop Video awards

Britney Spears—with three wins—holds the record for most wins in the Best Pop Video category. Taylor Swift already has two Best Pop Video awards. If she wins this category, she will tie with Spears.

7. Song of the Year streak

In 2023, Taylor Swift and Post Malone won Song of the Year for "Anti-Hero." If they win again this year for "Fortnite," they will make history as the first artists to win Song of the Year two years in a row.

8. Most wins in Best Direction

If Taylor Swift wins Best Direction for her work on "Fortnite," she will break her tie with David Fincher and Spike Jonze and become the first director with four wins. Currently, they each have won three times. Taylor's wins are for her videos, “The Man,” “All Too Well: The Short Film” and “Anti-Hero."

9. Best Director streak

If Taylor Swift wins Best Direction for "Fortnite," she will not only extend her record as most awarded female director and the most awarded performer, but will set a new record as the first director to win three years in a row.

VMA records Taylor Swift could extend

• Most Video of the year awards won for videos that they directed or co-directed themselves (“Fortnight” would be her fourth Video of the Year trophy)

VMA records Taylor Swift could tie

• Swift could tie Beyoncé's record for most Collaboration of the Year awards. Queen Bey has three and Taylor has two. Taylor is nominated this year for "Fortnite" with Post Malone.

• Taylor Swift could tie Britney Spears’ record for the most VMAs won in the Best Pop video category.
