This time of year Jewish people around the world celebrate Rosh Hashanah, or the "head the year" AKA the Jewish New Year. The biblical name for this holiday is Yom Teruah, which means the day of shouting or blasting. Rosh Hashanah is the beginning of the Jewish High Holy days. These days always start in the autumn months and it's a very special time of year for Jewish people.

When is Rosh Hashanah 2024?

In 2024, Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, and concludes at sundown on Friday, October 4, 2024.

What is Rosh Hashanah?

Families celebrate by lighting candles at home and eating a traditional Rosh Hashanah meal, which usually includes apples and honey. Sweet foods are eaten throughout the meal to welcome the sweetness of the year ahead.

A typically happy custom people look forward to during this time is sounding the Shafor, that's made from a cleaned ram's horn and makes a very loud horn sound. 10 days later is the most high holy day in Judaism: Yom Kippur, also known as the Day of Atonement.

Then there is a fast for 25 hours. It's a day to reflect on the past year. To do better each year after the last. Many Jewish people go to synagogue for holiday services.
