Cate Blanchett has won every acting award under the sun, including an Oscar. But it was her work on Ridley Scott's Robin Hood - particularly the stunts that went awry - that earned her some cool points from her three young sons.

Joining Russell Crowe's title character for "thrilling" forest adventures with bows and arrows quickly made Blanchett the envy of sons Dashiell, 8, Roman, 6, and Ignatius, 2. "I went up in their estimation from the first night on set, when I was called on to shoot a flaming arrow, missed my mark and hit a light, which duly exploded," the actress tells London's Times.

"I mean, how many mums do stuff like that?"

Blanchett, who turns 41 on Friday, May 14 (the day after her movie opens in Australia), also talks about the rewards and challenges of raising children with her husband, playwright Andrew Upton. "It is very touching when you see echoes of your parents, your brothers and sisters or your partner in them," she says. "Touching and strangely comforting, in fact. It completes some kind of circle, somehow."
