THE VOICE: 5 Things You Didn’t See From The First Live Show

Coaches Of The Voice

Described by host Darren McMullen as “the greatest show on earth,” The Voice Australia kicked off its live phase last night, with contestants from team Delta and team Seal the first to perform live to be judged with an audience vote. WHO was on set to capture all the behind-the-scenes action.

1. Joel shared his love of toothpicks
With his team not due to perform until next Monday, coach Joel Madden was able to kick back and enjoy the show. The most animated of the coaches, he received the biggest screams from the 1000-strong audience. During commercial breaks he danced in his chair, shaking his behind over the red buzzer and dipping into his pockets to hand out the toothpicks he’s become known to chew on—and which have earned their own twitter account, @JoelsToothpick!

2. Delta referred to notes
In the commercial breaks prior to her contestants' performances, the glamorous coach would refer to a set of palm cards placed beside her red chair, to help prompt her on what they’d worked on during rehearsals and lines for feedback.

3. The coaches did two takes of their opening number
The coaches took center stage at 6PM to pre-record their ensemble performance of My Chemical Romance’s “Sing.” However, the enraptured audience was so snap-happy with their mobile phones that producers were a forced to ask them to put their phones away and have the coaches do the song over.

4. Seal wears makeup!
While stunning coach Delta received the usual flourishes of makeup touch ups during commercial breaks, it was Seal—he has become known for brightening his tips with fluro and metallic Minx nail polish—who was given the most attention from the makeup artists’ powder brush!

5. Audience members met the contestants
The loudest audience members were given the chance to win tickets to the finale of The Voice and the opportunity to meet their contestant of choice. One besotted female fan chose to get a hug from Delta team member Ben Bennett, following his rendition of One Direction’s “One Thing.” After the show had finished taping, all the coaches made their way down to the mosh pit at the front of the stage to shake fans’ hands and happily pose for photos.
