How To: Go Bushwalking

Bored with pounding the pavement? Wander the wilderness!

Breathtaking vistas, native birds, rugged outdoorsmen—the Australian bush offers walking delights not found in the 'burbs. Organise your day and pack thoughtfully to walk—safely—on the wild side.

1. WALK within your capabilities, and those of your group. National Park websites and offices provide a wealth of information on walks to suit every fitness level and time limit.

2. CONSIDER the season in which you walk, keeping in mind the hours of daylight available to you. And check bom.gov.au for the latest weather forecasts.

3. CARRY a simple map and familiarise yourself with it. Don't walk offtrack unless you know what you’re doing with a topographic map and compass.

4. LEAVE a note with someone responsible, outlining your trip: where you plan to walk, when you expect to return and what you'd do in an emergency.

5. WALK with a friend or two. Solo bushwalking can be a gloriously meditative experience, but wander alone only if you are competent in the bush.

7. BE PREPARED to turn back. If Scott of the Antarctic had been a woman, he might have been Scott of the Hot Chocolate by the Fire, sensibly knowing when to call it a day.
