Is this Mexico's youngest mum?

Officials have confirmed that a 10-year old girl has given birth in Puebla, Mexico. She was admitted to hospital with complications on October 22, and the baby boy was delivered by caesarean section in early November. He weighed about 1.5kg (3lb3oz).

The baby was 9 weeks early, but Rogelio Gonzales, director at Women’s Hospital, Puebla, where he was born says he is doing well despite his early start. The mother has been discharged from hospital, but returns daily to breastfeed the infant.

Mr Gonzales also says the pregnancy has been reported to the State Attorney’s Office, due to the mother’s age. The age of consent in Puebla is 12, and authorities will investigate whether the girl is a victim of a sexual abuse.

She would not have been eligible for a termination as abortion is currently illegal in Puebla, and punishable by a prison term. Abortion law in Mexico is determined at a state level, with some states more lenient than others, and the Puebla State Congress is currently reviewing its abortion legislation.

Mexico’s newest young mum is not the country’s first pre-teen to give birth – In August 2010, an 11-year old girl delivered a healthy baby girl in southern Mexico. Internationally, the youngest recorded mum is Peruvian Lina Medina who fell pregnant at just five-years old. In addition, there have been at least two dozen recorded cases of girls giving birth before their twelfth birthday.
