Disney execs shocked at The Avengers success

The Avengers has become the biggest opening film of all time, overtaking Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2's record and making a whopping $200.3 million this weekend.

Now, the all-star cast have some serious celebrating to do: with Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, even Disney executives have been blown away by the film’s success.

"I'm running low on double takes," Dave Hollis, Disney's executive vice president for distribution, said Sunday. "As the numbers came in, we kept thinking, 'Can these numbers possibly be right?'"

For Scarlett Johansson, the box office results will ease the pain she says she suffered on set, during some extreme action scenes.

"You just have to get in the mindset that, for the next five or six months, you're going to be permanently bruised," she said.
