The Dark Knight Rises stars open up about massacre

The Dark Knight Rises actor Christian Bale, 38, expressed his shock and sorrow after a gunman opened fire at a midnight screening of the film in Aurora, Colorado on Friday.

Bale said in a statement: "Words cannot express the horror that I feel.

"I cannot begin to truly understand the pain and grief of the victims and their loved ones, but my heart goes out to them."

James Holmes, 24, is accused of being the man responsible for the massacre that killed 12 people and injured more than 50. He identified himself to authorities as the Joker.

The film's director Christopher Nolan also released a statement about the tragedy. He said:

"Speaking on behalf of the cast and crew of The Dark Knight Rises, I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community."

Nolan also called the shootings 'unbearably savage', adding:

"Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families."

Fellow cast member Anne Hathaway also spoke out about the shootings:

"My heart aches and breaks for the lives taken and altered by this unfathomably senseless act,' she said to ET online.

"I am at a loss for words how to express my sorrow. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families."

After news broke of the shootings, Warner Bros. canceled The Dark Knight Rises premiere in Paris that was scheduled to take place the same day.
