83rd Academy Awards: Nominees & Winners

Tom Hooper, an Australian and British citizen, accepts the Best Director trophy at the Oscars.



Tom Hooper, 38, Australian and British citizen, took home the Best Director award for The King's Speech, which stars Geoffrey Rush and Colin Firth, at the 83rd Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

His Adelaide-born mother, Meredith, had suggested he make the movie.

The King's Speech also got Sydney film producer Emile Sherman his first award for Best Picture, which he shared with Iain Canning and Gareth Unwin.

Other Aussie winners at the Oscars were Shaun Tan for The Lost Thing (short animated film), Dave Elsey for The Wolfman (make-up) and Kirk Baxter for The Social Network (editing).

Jacki Weaver (Animal Kingdom) and Geoffrey Rush (The King's Speech) lost out the supporting category trophies to Melissa Lou and Christian Bale.
