Yahoo Lifestyle Lara Stone Says Being Pregnant Was 'Frightening'
Unlike most other supermodels, Lara Stone has been refreshingly candid about her pregnancy.
After admitting earlier this year that being pregnant had cost her an important modelling job, Stone told Sunday Style in a new interview yesterday that the whole experience had been "frightening".
"Being pregnant affected my work quite early on - it's not like you can work until you're eight months pregnant," Stone explained. "It was quite frightening seeing my body change so much."
The model, who says she "ballooned" during pregnancy, admitted she worried about the impact of the weight gain on her body, because her body is her "job and livelihood".
"Also, I like working and I don't like sitting around at home, so I really wanted to get back into things," continued Stone. "It's nice once the baby's here, but then I was like, 'I really want to do something again.'"
Stone said she felt "shunned" by designers when she was expecting, which she hadn't been expecting.
"I've had a few meetings because when they hear pregnancy they freak out a bit," she said at the time. "So they need to see if I fit in their clothes. Everyone's so nice to you all the time. And its like, 'Ugh, you don't have to be'. It feels quite alienating because its like everyone's just lying to you. Because everyones like, 'You're great!' And you're, 'Well, obviously I'm not.'"
And while other celebrities seem to gloat about fitting into their skinny jeans just days after giving birth, Stone says the reality of her pregnancy wasn't quite so glamorous.
"I was in maternity jeans at nine weeks. I was bloated all over, had limp greasy hair, no energy and I could eat (and waddle) for England," she said. "There is so much pressure these days to look fantastic during pregnancy and to lose the weight within days of leaving [the] hospital. I have nothing against those who do, but it's not normal. Your body changes hugely during pregnancy and it takes time to go back."
