New Designer for McQueen

Sarah Burton, Alexander McQueen's right hand and design assistant for more than a decade, has been appointed as creative director of the late designer's eponymous label.

Burton, 35, was born in Manchester and undertook fashion training at the Central Saint Martins design school in London. In 1996 she began working for McQueen, and in 2000 was appointed head of women's wear design. Burton worked closely with the designer right up until his death in February this year.

Speaking to UK's Telegraph newspaper, Burton said she would take up where McQueen left off.

"The creation of modern, beautifully-crafted clothes was at the heart of Lee's vision," she said. "I intend to stay true to his legacy."

Burton was responsible for completing the 16 pieces that formed McQueen's final collection shown in Paris earlier this year.

"He wanted to get back to the handcraft he loved, and the things that are being lost in the making of fashion," she said of the inspiration behind the range. "He was looking at the art of the Dark Ages, but finding light and beauty in it."

Mr Jonathan Akeroyd, president and CEO of Alexander McQueen, said Burton's understanding and experience would enable the company to stay true to its values.

"Sarah is extremely talented and under her creative leadership we are ready to enter a new phase in the brand's history," he added.
