After a three-year hiatus from the fashion industry, John Galliano has been appointed the creative director of Maison Martin Margiela.

The designer was fired from Christian Dior, as well as his namesake label, John Galliano, in 2011 after he was filmed making anti-Semitic comments in a Parisian cafe.

He's since kept a relatively low-profile, with the Maison Martin Margiela role marking his first official job in nearly three years.

"This appointment marks a new era in the history of the Maison," OTB President Renzo Rosso said in a statement. "A visionary, non-conformist, creative talent to give new significance to the iconoclastic heritage of Margiela, and new impulse to its exciting future."

Galliano was heralded as one of the most talented designers of his generation prior to the 2011 incident, which many saw as the end of his career.

He blamed a drug and alcohol addiction for his slur, saying at the time he had "no recollection" of the event.

"I read about it afterwards," Galliano said.

However, the designer, who has been working closely with Oscar de la Renta in recent months, says he accepts full responsibility for his remarks.

"He has worked long and hard on his recovery and I am happy to give him the opportunity to reimmerse himself in the world of fashion and reacclimate in an environment where he has been so creative," said de la Renta. "Everyone in life deserves a second chance, especially someone as talented as John. I think that life is about forgiving and helping people...I think John is doing all the right things."
