Gisele Bundchen Scared of Wearing High Heels On The Catwalk

With high heels reaching hazardous heights over the last few seasons, models including Gisele Bundchen are finally putting their foot down.

Bundchen claims she is "scared" of walking in heels, refusing to wear them on the runway if she feels they are too high.

According to designer Nicolas Ghesquiere, Bundchen, along with Amber Valletta and Carolyn Murphy, said no to wearing his footwear during the recent Balenciaga spring/summer show.

"The idea was to have this crazy casting with Gisele Bundchen and Amber Valletta and Carolyn Murphy and they said no to high heels," Ghesquiere explained to NY Magazine. "They were not used to walking in heels anymore. Gisele was worried, she would not walk in my heels."

Suri Cruise's Shoe Collection Is Worth $150,000.

Although Ghesquiere claims he did not design shoes especially for the Brazilian model, he did debut flat shoes especially for the show, with models sporting chunky, "almost Dr. Martens'-esque shoes".

"He was already thinking flats...already preparing the flat shoes," a source told NY Magazine.

It's thought that the recession is to blame for the high heel heights of the last few years, with Elizabeth Semmelhack, author of 'Heights of Fashion: A History of the Elevated Shoe' telling CNN, "Heel heights noticeably grew during the Great Depression of the 1930s, the oil crisis in the 1970s, and when the dotcom bubble burst in the 2000s. During tough economic times there's a greater need for escapism."
