If you thought the Rich Kids Of Instagram were a tad excessive, may we introduce you to the Rich Housewives Of Instagram: wealthy women who take photos of their designer handbags, jewellery and shoes, attracting thousands of likes and followers on the social media platform.

Driven by labels such as Christian Louboutin, Hermes and Chanel, the accounts give their followers an inside look at a world normally reserved only for the rich and famous.

“The fancier the clothes and accessories you snap, the more followers you have,” commented fashionista.com.

And with some users attracting hundreds of thousands of fans, it seems these bored housewives have finally found their niche.

It’s good news for brands, as Instagram posts can often lead to sales according to John Merakovsky, MD at Experian Marketing Service for Asia Pacific.

“After visiting Instagram and Pinterest, visitors from Singapore go on to Korean shopping site Gmarket, local online shopping mall Jipaban, Zalora, as well as global sites such as Ebay and Groupon.

“Global brands such as Ann Taylor, Kate Spade, and Maybelline are also gaining traction on these niche networks.”

But there’s a dark side to these seemingly innocent snaps as well, with one instagrammer telling fashionista.com she’s heard of burglars locating people’s houses through geotag.

Plus, flaunting one’s wealth can often attract negativity, particularly in today’s unstable economic climate.

“I just like to share my passions and interests and found people with similar tastes and likes,” one Instagrammer told fashionista.com. “Of course, you get the occasional haters, which bothers me, but you just block and move on.”

One Instagrammer said she remains completely anonymous to avoid upsetting people she knows in real life.

“In my real life, I am humble and really don’t show or tell people what brand I carry, use, or wear,” she said. “Instagram gives me that guilt-free pleasure of saying ‘look’ without feeling guilty. Being anonymous has its advantages. In real life, not all your friends have or are at the same level in terms of lifestyle. You don’t want to make someone feel bad because ‘I have or own this’ and they don’t.”

But with the Rich Kids Of Instagram set to chronicle their designer lives on TV soon, it seems there’ll be no stopping the Rich Housewives as they flaunt their wealth to the world.
