Women We Love: Rebel Wilson

While Hollywood actresses continue to (rightfully) lament the lack of three-dimensional character roles for women in film, Australian comedian Rebel Wilson has taken the matter into her own hands.

The Fat Pizza and Bogan Pride actress, who for the past few years has been busy making a name for herself in the US, has this month sold a movie pitch to Universal Pictures, which she will write, produce and star in herself.
Since her small, but standout Hollywood breakthrough role as Brynn in Bridesmaids, Wilson has collected widespread kudos for her scene-stealing performance in the musical comedy Pitch Perfect.

Wilson, 26, has also been a hit on the US talk show circuit on which she’s been doing the press rounds for Pitch Perfect. She recently performed a Salt-n-Pepa duet with Ellen DeGeneres and joked with Conan O’Brien about learning her “American English” from trash reality show Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.

Now the writer, producer and stand-up comic is set to appear alongside Mark Wahlberg in the new Michael Bay film Pain & Gain as well as with Christina Hendricks in Struck By Lightning.

It’s all a far cry from her upbringing in Sydney. Rebel is her real name. Her parents, who were professional dog showers, raised her with her three siblings – Liberty, Ryot and Annachi. Now, there’s got to be some great material in that for her new (as yet untitled) movie project for Universal.
