Who wore it best? Kate Middleton vs. Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian and Kate Middleton are two names that are rarely heard together. The reality star and the royal don’t really have a whole lot in common.

Though, as a surprise to many, Middleton has taken some fashion cues from Kardashian for her Diamond Jubilee ensemble.

Middleton stepped out onto the Chelsea pier this weekend in a bright red Alexander McQueen dress. The same dress that has previously been worn by Kardashian and X Factor judge Tulisa Contostavlos.

Though, of course, the regal Duchess made the style all her own. Kardashian wore a sleeveless, much shorter version of the dress last year while filming scenes for her reality show. Contostavlos also worked a sleeveless version during auditions for X Factor. Middleton put her own spin on it by with a boat neckline, long sleeves, and a knee-length hemline.

Middleton accessorized her outfit with a Strathearn tartan scarf, a maritime-themed brooch (a gift from the Royal Navy Submarine Service), nude LK Bennett heels and a Sylvia Fletcher hat.

Despite being the third fashionista to sport the dress in the past year, Middleton’s love for McQueen seemed to surpass any copycat fears.

Sarah Burton, the same woman who created her gorgeous wedding gown, designed the red Jubilee dress. Middleton was perfectly coordinated with the royal barge that featured velvet red seats and 10,000 freshly cut flowers.

Middleton was likely going for a look that would not upstage the Queen, who wore an Angela Kelly coat with Swarovski crystals, threaded silk ribbon, organza frill and gold, silver and ivory spots, although the duchess’s fashion choices are typically guaranteed front page coverage.

As the Jubilee continues all eyes will be on Middleton to see if she chooses another celeb to copy but it’s likely a bit of slim-line tailoring and personal touches will ensure she makes it all her own.
