Yumi Stynes cancels Studio 10 appearance after Kerri-Anne clash
Yumi Stynes chose to pull out of her scheduled Studio 10 appearance today after her fiery with clash with Kerri-Anne Kennerley during yesterday’s episode.
“I decided to give myself the day off… it’s very important,” the presenter wrote on Instagram, hours after she had labelled Kerri-Anne “racist” following her discussion about the Australia Day ‘Change The Date’ protests.
During the segment that has since sparked fury on Twitter, Yumi called out Kerri-Anne for her comments when Kerri-Anne tried to ask what protestors have done to stop Aboriginal women and children “being raped” in the outback.
Yumi was clearly unimpressed and suggested her point is “not even faintly true” and that she was sounding “quite racist”.
When Kerri-Anne replied saying she was ‘”seriously offended”, Yumi took it further, saying, “Keep going then, because every time you open your mouth you’re sounding racist”.
“You’re actually connecting rape, child abuse and you’re drawing a straight line” Yumi continued.
On Tuesday Yumi informed her followers she wouldn’t be appearing on Studio 10.
“I was booked come in to showcase a recipe from one of my cookbooks … INSTEAD, I decided to give myself the day off,” she wrote on Instagram.
“This is not because of what happened today between Kerri-Anne and I… I’m not coming in because I really urgently want to lie around and do nothing. It’s very important.”
Yumi also added that she already warned the producer of her absence and had given her suggestions for her replacement but from then on, it was “not my problem”.

While it didn’t look good for the show, host Sarah Harris chose not to ignore the fact that Yumi was missing and opened the discussion by saying they “wanted her here” as they go further into the issue with indigenous voices included.
Meanwhile, Kerri-Anne defended herself by speaking out on 2GB radio with Ben Fordham, claiming her comments about sexual abuse in outback Aboriginal communities had “nothing to do” with racism and she was still offended by the accusation.
“I don’t think I’m superior, I don’t think anyone else is inferior, but I just stated a fact,” she said.
Her argument has been met by support from Former Studio 10 executive producer Rob McKnight who accused Yumi of throwing her co-star “under the bus” in his opinion piece titled,‘Today is exactly why I never let Yumi Stynes on Studio 10′.
However, not everyone on Twitter is willing to sympathise.
Disgusting! This debate is about us Aboriginal ppl being valued & respected as a race, acknowledging our resilience & survival. Many people of all races are now marching & supporting our struggle. Putrid & ignorant comments from KAK. Thanks @yumichild ♥️ #WhitePrivilege #racism https://t.co/6gjOnevY0F

The real issue I see here is why once again is there a panel discussing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues and not one person is Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. #disrespectful

I'm not seeing a "clash" here. I'm seeing one person going on a baseless rant & another person calmly pulling them up on it. Also note the audience booing Yumi after seeming quite okay with Kerri Anne's awful assertions. https://t.co/8gHE9biWTP

So KAK insinuates that those protesting were ignorant, somehow manages to conflate protesting in support of aboriginal issues with supporting domestic violence in indigenous communities – gets called out and her response is to be "seriously offended" – what a cop out!

In real time, this Australian television audience just demonstrated to us that too many Australians think being called a racist is more offensive than saying racist things.
