“For me, an artist is someone who is not scared to be on the edge," says French singer and songwriter Yseult, "not scared to share their emotion, their truth." Yseult, whose dramatic vocals have delivered everything from power pop and head-banging rock to variété française ballads, is herself a fearless creative force. After releasing her 2015 debut album on a record label, she decided to go independent and has since put out three EPs and her most recent effort, Mental, on her own.

"Sometimes, to have a 'team' means that you need to navigate within the industry. And I like to flirt with the industry," she says. "I like to walk through as a black sheep." Being an indie artist also means having unfettered control of her music, her image, and her artistic evolution. "It’s the chance to create and re-create—a rebirth with each album," she says.

Yseult's playlist for our Art issue features artists who reflect that spirit, including Kate Bush ("She writes her own music, she produces her own videos; she's genius"), FKA Twigs ("Each of her projects is an evolution of her artistry, her sexuality, of her as a human"), and the late Sophie ("Her sound, whether for her own projects or for other artists, was so immersive"). For Yseult, the highest praise she can give a fellow artist is to invoke her patron saint of reinvention: "It's giving Madonna."
