This New Yorker loves to pair an over-the-top lace skirt with chunky Dr. Martens

Chelsea Henriquez (@chelseaasoflate) loves playing around with fashion, and living in New York gives her the freedom to do so. In this episode of ITK: Coveted Closets, the fashion influencer opens the door to her colorful closet and gives us a tour of some of her favorite pieces, ranging from thrift shop finds to sustainable basics.

“Where I live influences my style because New York gives me so much freedom,” Chelsea says. “Literally, I can walk out the door looking all types of crazy, and no one will bat an eye.”

Chelsea describes her style as daring, colorful and unserious. Her biggest style influences growing up were all the “Disney girlies” — like Raven Symone of That’s So Raven and Lizzie McGuire.

“It’s important for me to express myself through my clothing because this is literally my canvas. This is what I play with every single day,” she says.

One of Chelsea’s favorite pieces is a green metallic fringe dress, which she says “embodies everything I love about fashion and style. It’s colorful. It’s fun. It’s playful. It’s a conversation starter.” Next, she shows a white tulle dress that was actually a little kid’s dress found while thrifting and is now worn as a skirt.

Other highlights include a pair of faux leather leggings from American Apparel — the oldest item in Chelsea’s closet, which she has had since high school — and metallic platform sandals that Chelsea says she wears like sneakers and chunky-sole platform Doc Martens. “I started with the lowest pair and slowly started rising in heel level or platform,” she says of the height.

And the most important part of the closet tour is Chelsea’s top five style tips:

1. Create a character.

Put together the person that you’re going to step out into the world as, whether you’re feeling a certain time period or aesthetic — make getting dressed each day as fun as playing dress-up.

2. Your hair can be an accessory, too.

Make sure your hair plays into your outfit by styling it in a way that works with the look.

3. Don’t be scared to change styles.

“The only constant in life is change,” Chelsea says, “And we should celebrate that through our wardrobes and our personal styles as well.”

4. Try clothes on more often.

Find new combinations and plan new outfits by trying things on. Play with different combinations of colors and textures to find out what you like together.

5. Be daring with your fashion.

“I think it’s important to be daring in our style because life is way too short to be anything but our true, authentic selves,” she says. “If you don’t look back five or ten years from now and regret some of your outfit choices, then you weren’t daring enough.”
