“Yellowjackets”' Samantha Hanratty Talks Baby Boy's Recovery from Surgery and Why Season 3 Was 'Difficult' to Shoot (Exclusive)

Samantha Hanratty, one of the breakout stars who portrays teen Misty on Yellowjackets, has a lot to be excited about in addition to the cannibalistic survival series' long-awaited return with season 3.

The actress, 29, welcomed her first baby with husband Christian DeAnda in December 2024 and later revealed that their son underwent surgery for a cleft lip at the beginning of February.

"The surgeon did such an amazing job! It was a three-hour surgery and it was absolutely terrifying but our little one is so strong!" Hanratty shared on Instagram at the time, adding that her son, who will be 2 months old at the end of February, was doing "incredible."

While talking with PEOPLE about the new episodes of Yellowjackets on Wednesday, Feb. 12, she shared another update on her son's health, revealing that "he's all recovered from surgery."

"He just has a couple more weeks of stents in his nose, and then he's gonna be all good to go," the proud mom told PEOPLE. Echoing comments she made at the premiere a day later, she said that her son was "the embodiment of prayers answered, like, the purest, most beautiful gift in the entire world."

She added, "I'm obsessed with him."

When it came to filming season 3, which took place over the summer of last year, Hanratty told PEOPLE that being pregnant at the time made things sometimes difficult.

"Misty is such an interesting character and playing her while being pregnant was very interesting to do. But I think, if anything, it just made me more emotional, which is kind of hard to already beat because I'm, like, a very emotional person," she shared.

Turning to her costar, Sophie Thatcher (who plays teen Natalie), Hanratty quipped, "I don't know if you've ever seen me cry, Sophie, but yeah, I'm a little emotional."

She then explained "the season was crazy and it was very difficult. In those moments, being able to overcome it and be like, 'Damn, I literally just had an extremely difficult pregnancy and I did the show, I feel very proud and accomplished,' that's absurd."

Revealing that she also tried to hide her growing baby bump from the cameras, she added, "I was very proud of trying to, like, I tried to cover it with my posture. I was just wearing a lot of bigger clothes, bigger pants and all these things."

Reflecting on the whole experience, Hanratty concluded, "It was very interesting."

New episodes of Yellowjackets season 3 debut Fridays on Paramount+ with SHOWTIME before airing Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
