Yankees Player Oscar Gonzalez Breaks Eye Socket After Fouling Ball Off His Face

The Yankees outfielder was playing against the Diablos Rojos during an exhibition game in Mexico City when the accident happened

Yankees player Oscar Gonzalez is recovering from a break in his eye socket after fouling a ball off his face on Monday night.

The New York Yankees outfielder, 26, was playing against the Diablos Rojos during an exhibition game in Mexico City's Estadio Alfredo Harp Helu when the accident happened.

In a video shared on X (formerly known as Twitter), Gonzalez was captured foul-tipping the ball into his face, fracturing his right orbital, before falling to the ground in pain.

According to ESPN, the ball bounced off Gonzalez’s bat handle before going up to his face and knocking off his helmet.

The outlet reported that he was sitting upright when he was taken off the field.  He was also treated by Dr. Carlos Smith, the Yankees Team Physician, and Dr. Elisa Saleme, the Head Physician.

“Oscar González was treated for a right eye contusion at Estadio Alfedo Harp Helu by Dr. Carlos Smith, Yankees Team Physician, and Dr. Elisa Saleme, the Head Physician assigned to this two-game series,” the Yankees said in a press release, per the MLB (Major League Baseball) website.

They added that Gonzalez would remain in hospital to undergo further tests. “González was taken to Centro Medico ABC in Mexico City for further evaluation and testing. Dr. Smith accompanied Gonzalez to the hospital," the statement read.

The statement added, “Further information will be provided as it becomes available.”

According to ESPN, Gonzalez had been taking part in the Yankees' split team and had been playing a two-game series at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helu. The outlet added that the athlete had also been reassigned to the minors earlier on Monday.
