Brain food: Mackerel
This cold-water fish is a great source of the omega-3 fats DHA and EPA, which can improve brain function and ward off the blues, says WH nutrition expert Kristen Beck. “Omega-3s help squelch inflammation in the brain and may be beneficial in managing depression and neurological disorders including ADHD and dyslexia,” she says. “Some studies even suggest they’re helpful in the treatment and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease.” Beck recommends you eat oily fish, like mackerel, at least twice a week. Sprinkle fillets with sea salt, ground pepper and fresh lemon juice, then pan-fry on medium-high for 4 minutes. Flip and cook for a minute on the other side.
