Woman Tells Her Mother-in-Law to Get a Hotel After Repeatedly Rearranging Her Kitchen: 'Heartless'

A woman brought her mother-in-law to tears after attempting to set clear boundaries for temporarily living together.

In a post on Reddit’s popular “Am I the A------” forum, the woman revealed her mother-in-law came to stay with them while her own home underwent repairs. The 29-year-old said she and her husband, 30, have adapted their home for their significant height difference, “with me being 6'6" and him being 5'7.”

“We realized early on that it was easier for him to use a step stool to reach what he needed in the kitchen than for me to constantly be crouching to get what I need as that gets painful quickly for me,” she wrote.

The woman said everything was going well in their home until her mother-in-law became fixated on rearranging items in the kitchen.

“She keeps harping on about how it's ridiculous everything is so high up, and it's rude for guests," the woman said. "My husband has repeatedly shut her down stating my comfort matters more than theoretical guests and asked her not to move things. She lets it go for a day then things are moved again."

The “final straw” came when the woman was unable to find her mugs to make coffee.

They were eventually found on the “lower shelf,” but it hurt the woman's back to reach them so she became angry and “snappish" towards her mother-in-law.

“I told her if she couldn't stop herself from rearranging my kitchen she could get a hotel room as I have had enough of her entitlement,” the woman said.

Her mother-in-law began crying and arguing, “We shouldn’t all suffer just because I'm tall, she then also began to say how I'm heartless to expect her to stay in a hotel over the holidays."

The woman said that while her husband has continued to support her throughout the situation, she can tell that he's "anxious and upset" — especially after hearing his mother crying in their guest room.

“I feel awful that my snapping led to him feeling like this,” she said, adding, “Maybe I should have just put up with it or been more gentle about how I dealt with it?”

Reddit users had mixed thoughts about the situation, with many feeling that the woman was in the right to stick up for herself and her home.

“NTA [not the a------],” one person wrote. “You stood up for yourself and gave a fair warning. I believe you've been quite patient. I appreciate that your husband is uncomfortable but so be it, sometimes life is uncomfortable. She had plenty of opportunities to stop complaining and to stop moving things around before you drew this line. Express appreciation for your husband and just let her sit with it.”

However, another suggested that the woman should try to meet her mother-in-law somewhere in the middle.

“How about a compromise for the holiday season?” they wrote. “Have her move 1 or 2 mugs and other items that she frequently uses to a height easy for her to reach, while leaving everything else in place. If single items such as salt and pepper shakers are out of reach, they could be relocated to a lower shelf that MIL can reach without you bending down.”
