One creator is sharing her simple yet on trend DIY to create a chunky, maximalist necklace.
On Aug. 19, Kiersay (@kiersay) shared a video on TikTok revealing the easy, “less than 10-minute” chunky necklace she created with a hardware store chain and some carefully curated keychains.
“I’m in Missoula, Montana, and there was this [flea] market yesterday and they had a bunch of, like, charms for keychains,” she says. “I went and bought I think six [or] seven of them, and we’re gonna put them onto this chain now and make a cool, personalized chain charm necklace.”
Among Kiersay’s keychains are an intricate silver horseshoe, a key, a tennis racket, a deck of cards, a few horses and a spoon.
What is maximalist fashion?
Unlike minimalist fashion, maximalist fashion relies on the notion that “more is more.”
“Maximalist fashion is all about ignoring the traditional rules of fashion and creating out-of-the-box, bold looks,” Clique Magazine reports. “The more prints, volume, colors, and textures, the better. Some view this style of dressing as ‘messy’ or ‘throwing outfits together with little thought,’ but maximalist fashion, like any style of dressing, is an art.”
“This is so cool. Oh my God,” she says after surveying her progress. “So here we have it. The easiest little DIY charm necklace. I want to put so many more on this. I think, like, such a maximalist vibe would be so cool.”
The metal chain, per a follow-up video by Kiersay, is from Home Depot. Due to the chain’s length, Kiersay says, you could also wear the charm necklace as a chunky charm bracelet.
“Chain is from Home Depot, baby,” she says. “My friend went a couple years ago, I’ve had this necklace forever, and he said he just went to the chain section, figured out what length he wanted and got it cut.”

Several TikTok users have taken to Kiersay’s comment section to share their excitement over this DIY, with many saying they prefer her rendition over her inspiration photo. Other creators are likening the maximalist, chunky necklace trend to charm necklaces that were popular in the ’80s.
“Ok but i kind of love that they’re all silver,” @hsearcey wrote, to which Kiersay responded, “Yes same!!!! i want to definitely make other ones that are all gold / bunch of different colours.”
“We had plastic chains with different coloured charms we could collect for necklaces in the 80s!” @miz_earthrocker wrote.
“Yes yes yes!!! I see keychains all the time that I think are cute and have wanted to repurpose but never knew how!!” @ajchip replied.
