A Queensland woman who was injured in a horrific fatal car accident, that left three women dead, has woken up in a stable condition after spending 10 days in a coma.
Kayla Behrens, 23, was the only survivor of a Holden involved in the three-car smash near Maryborough on Sunday April 30.
After spending 10 days in a coma, Ms Behrens’ husband Dave Behrens said his wife was now awake and in a “stable condition”.
“For those that may not be aware, 10 days ago my beautiful wife Kaylah was involved in a horrific car accident and has spent most of this time in a coma,” he shared in a post on Facebook.
“I would like to let you all know that today she has awoken and is in a stable condition.”
Ms Behrens’ friends – Kelsie Davies, 17, and mum-of-two Michale Chandler, 29 – both died at the scene as did the driver of the third car, 52-year-old nurse Sheree Robertson.
It’s understood Ms Robertson was driving home from work at the time of the incident.
Police will allege a stolen Mercedes-Benz driven by a 13-year-old hit the Holden on Saltwater Creek Rd before their car was forced into the path of Ms Robertson’s oncoming Mazda.
Mr Behrens asked for people to keep praying for Kaylah.
“There will still be a very long road ahead in her recovery but this is a significant milestone,” he said.
“Please continue to keep Kaylah in your prayers through this time.
“I would like to thank absolutely everyone around us during this time and the time ahead for your support.
“The level of support we have received has been beyond what I could have ever asked for.”
A 13-year-old Bundaberg boy has been charged with three counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and one count of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
A second 13-year-old boy has been charged with two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and one count each of driving without a licence, possessing dangerous drugs, however police do not believe he was in the vehicle at the time of the fatal crash.
A GoFundMe has been started on behalf of the families of Ms Davies, Ms Chandler, Ms Behrens and Ms Robertson. To date it has raised more than $92,000.
