Woman goes on solo honeymoon

This woman has divided opinion by taking off on honeymoon without her new husband.

Sydney woman Stephanie Allison, who married her partner of 13 years, Doug Allison, in Croatia last month decided to ditch her husband after the nuptials to "find herself" on a three-month trip about Europe.

Stephanie, who is currently basking in the Christmas atmosphere in London, left Doug just two weeks after tying the knot but she claims it's one of the best things she's ever done.

"I've always felt like I should do something solo and I've never really travelled by myself," Stephanie said in a YouTube video on her channel.

"So I really wanted to get to know myself while I'm alone and so I decided to go on my own adventure and discover what it's like to travel by myself. After 13 years together I guess we both need a bit of a holiday from each other as well."

While Stephanie claims Doug fully supports her decision to take off on a world trip without him, she says opinions of her unusual trip have varied.

Along her travels, the Sydney-sider has also met an Indian woman during a farm stay in Iceland, who is also on a solo honeymoon.

While they're both content with their decisions, they find that even just mentioning they are traveling alone raises a few eyebrows, let alone when they tell people they've left their spouses behind.

"Every time we tell someone that we've just gotten married and now we're going to travel solo, everyone just thinks that we're nuts," Stephanie said.

"A lot of people are curious but I think there's an expectation that once you get married you always have to do things together but we were saying that once you get married you don't have to stop being your own individual person.

"You still have your own goals, your own dreams, your own aspirations and you can't stop pursuing them because that's what makes you happy as a person too."

Stephanie and Doug have known each other for 13 years and she admits "they've never spent this significant amount of time apart in the whole time they've been together".

And while Stephanie does say that she misses hugging her cats and dogs back home, she claims her solo expeditions will continue in the future.

"I'm going to solo travel every year even if it is at least for a few days at a time," she said.
