Willie Nelson Eats This Comfort Food ‘Almost Every Day’
Paired with everything from chicken fried steak to ice cream.
You know the old cliché—"Stars, they’re just like us"—but when it comes to food, it’s surprisingly true. Whether it’s chowing down on childhood snacks like Cocoa Puffs, Goldfish, or Uncrustables, or grabbing their go-to orders at fast food joints like McDonald's and In-N-Out, celebrities have food quirks that make them downright relatable.
And like us, they often have that one meal they can’t get enough of—a dish they could eat every single day without getting bored. For some, it’s a spicy Tex-Mex breakfast. For others, a warm, comforting plate of pasta. For Willie Nelson? It’s a dish most of us would consider a treat, but for the 91-year-old country legend, it’s more of a daily ritual.
The Recipe Willie Nelson Enjoys on the Daily
Willie credits his “sensible” routine oatmeal breakfast for keeping him energized and in good health, but we know his love for breakfast foods extends far beyond the morning hours. One dish in particular might just be the secret to his enduring good spirits.
In his new cookbook, co-authored with his wife, Annie, the couple shares some of their favorite recipes, including a few of Willie’s comfort food staples: chicken fried steak, chicken and dumplings, and roasted banana pudding. But one dish stands out as a near-daily indulgence: waffles.
“Annie makes me a waffle almost every day,” Willie shared in the book. And he’s not picky about how it's served. “I like ‘em with chicken-fried steak and gravy. I like ‘em with ice cream. I like ‘em with maple syrup.”
Willie’s waffle philosophy is simple: the more, the merrier. “I never met a waffle I didn’t like,” he said. But there’s one waffle experience he treasures most—and it’s a sweet memory tied to his music career.
During a gig in Belgium, Willie was introduced to the iconic Belgian waffle. “The club owner sent a whole batch of waffles to our bus for two straight days,” he recalled. “Fluffy on the inside, crispy on the outside, they came with a heap of fresh berry preserves. Hands down, the world’s best waffles.”
That exact recipe isn’t in the cookbook, but we do have a copycat recipe that can recreate the same fluffy, crispy magic at home. Pair your waffle with a side of eggs (any style) or a few pieces of crispy fried chicken, and you’ll be dining just like the "Red Headed Stranger" himself.
Most of us probably don't get the chance to enjoy a waffle every day, but we can certainly see why Willie has made it part of his routine. There’s something about the comfort, the sweetness, and the endless ways to enjoy them that makes waffles more than just a breakfast food. They’re a simple way to keep the good vibes rolling, and no one knows that more than Willie Nelson himself.
