Will Camilla ever be queen?

Camilla Parker-Bowles celebrated her 70th birthday this year and in what could be a little present, she's apparently become more popular among the general public in 2017.

A poll has shown more and more people want the Duchess of Cornwell to become queen when Prince Charles takes the throne.

The same poll was run back when the pair were newlyweds, but unsurprisingly, only seven percent of recipients were of the opinion that Camilla should be queen.

Fast forward 12 years and things are looking significantly up, with 39 percent of the public wanting her to take that title.

But the questions remains; will she be ever actually be queen?

Well, the most likely scenario will be that Camilla takes the title of ‘Princess consort’ rather than ‘Queen’.

The matter is raised in the ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ section of the Prince’s official website where the answer is crystal clear.

“As was explained at the time of their wedding in April 2005, it is intended that The Duchess will be known as HRH The Princess Consort when The Prince of Wales accedes to The Throne.”

However, royal correspondent Andrew Robert disagrees, telling Sunrise during the year that “technically, unless there’s a change of law or an act of parliament [Camilla] will become ‘Queen consort’, they’d have to change the law to stop her being ‘Queen consort.”

British royal protocol dictates that when a woman marries a king, she becomes a royal and adopts the corresponding title of ‘Queen’, but that isn’t the same for men.

When a queen marries, her husband doesn’t automatically become ‘King’, unless he’s already a king in his own right – hence why Queen Elizabeth’s husband isn’t ‘King’ Philip.

The Camilla question is a little different however, because technically, as Prince Charles’ wife, she is also the ‘Princess of Wales’. Camilla has never chosen to use that title – presumably out of respect for Diana – and instead opted for the lesser title of ‘Duchess of Cornwell’.

She may very well do the same when Prince Charles becomes king.
