Why Princess Eugenie's wedding gift from the Queen won't be as generous as Harry's

Today, Princess Eugenie marries her boyfriend of seven years, Jack Brooksbank, in a ceremony at St George's Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle.

Among the 850 guests invited into the chapel will be members of the royal family including, of course, her grandmother Queen Elizabeth, who will probably need to turn up with a gift for the occasion. But rumour has it, it won't be anywhere near as generous as the gift she gave Prince Harry for his wedding to Meghan Markle five months ago.

Following the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's nuptials, it was reported that Queen Elizabeth presented the newlyweds with the wedding gift of all wedding gifts: a house. Which kind of makes you feel a little hard done by about the body lotion and the batch of freshly-baked scones your own Granny gave you for your last birthday.

Queen Elizabeth reportedly gifted Harry and Meghan with York Cottage in the grounds of the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. Similarly, when Prince William married Kate Middleton in 2011, his grandmother presented them with Anmer Hall. That sprawling property is also located within the Sandringham Estate, and was where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge lived for the first few years of their marriage.

But for Princess Eugenie, royal experts think it'll be different. Not, believe it or not, because of any kind of favouritism, however. Speaking to MarieClaire.com, royal expert and deputy editor of website Royal CentralJamie Samhan said it was all down to the fact that William and Harry are working royals.

Because William and Harry are closer in line to the throne than Princess Eugenie (they're second and sixth, respectively), they are seen as more senior royals and their full-time jobs are to carry out official duties and tours on behalf of the rest of the family. Princess Eugenie, however, has a real job. The 28-year-old is Associate Director at London art gallery Hauser & Wirth, where she plans special projects, supports the gallery's artists, and manages events.

"They are and will be, full-time working royals for the rest of their lives," Jamie said of William and Harry. "One of the perks of this is Her Majesty can justify the lavish properties she has gifted them in return for their duty to the crown."

But before you worry that Eugenie will be completely snubbed by her grandmother, it's likely she won't go empty-handed. The Telegraphreports that for Zara Tindall's wedding, the Queen gifted her grandmother with £40,000 from her own funds to hire Edinburgh’s Palace of Holyroodhouse for the wedding reception. Not quite the value of a whole property, but pretty damn generous all the same.
