Why Kevin Smith hasn't reached out to friend Ben Affleck amid split rumors

The "Chasing Amy" and "Mallrats" filmmaker is "loose-lipped," he says.

Like the rest of the world, Kevin Smith, the filmmaker and actor who often collaborates with Ben Affleck, has heard that his longtime friend's marriage to Jennifer Lopez is on the rocks. Smith's wife, Jennifer Schwalbach Smith, even suggested he reach out to the Argo star.

But Smith, who attended the pair's wedding, chose not to.

"Obviously, he's been going through a thing, or at least that's what it says in the press and whatnot," Smith told PEOPLE Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con. "I, being his least trustworthy friend who's very loose-lipped... I was like, 'The last person he needs to hear from right now is the guy who chats a lot.' So when he's in a good place, he'll let me know."

Smith has a connection to Lopez, too, because she appeared in the 2004 movie Jersey Girl, which he directed. Affleck was the star of that one. (Schwalbach Smith also had a role.)

Bennifer — as they've been called for decades now, thanks to Smith — became engaged in November 2002, but called off their planned wedding in September 2023, before ending their relationship entirely in January 2004 — two months before the release of their movie with Smith.

They famously coupled up again in early 2021 and were engaged again by April 2022 and wed that August. But, in recent weeks, they've again sparked rumors of a breakup, much to the disappointment of fans.

Smith told the magazine that he will be contacting Affleck in the fall, as he begins work on his next movie in the Jay and Silent Bob franchise.
