Why Craig Melvin Is Suddenly Absent from 'Today'
Today star Craig Melvin—who gained attention recently when he was announced as the new co-anchor for the first two hours of the morning show, taking Hoda Kotb's position—was absent from the show on Tuesday, March 11, leaving fans wondering why.
Thankfully, Melvin's co-stars clarified why he wasn't there, revealing that he came down with the flu, leading Peter Alexander to step in to host with Savannah Guthrie. Savannah Sellers also helped out, with Alexander and Sellers described as "cousins of the show."
Guthrie joked about Melvin's absence happening the day after his alma mater Wofford College's basketball team won a major championship, saying, "I mean, you decide, he did test positive for the flu. However, it coincides with Wofford winning last night so maybe he stayed up and watched the game."
Alexander also weighed in on Melvin's situation, stating, "Craig our friend, is getting well, he's struggling with a little bit of a bug...Things are warming up so hopefully that puts to rest flu season for the rest of us."
Dylan Dreyer also commented on Craig's absence during the third hour, noting, "If you heard him yesterday, it’s no surprise."
As the show aired on March 11, fans watching at home were sad to see Melvin missing from their screens, such as one who wrote on X, "Boo! no Craig Melvin this morning. Feel better 🤒."

Last Friday, fans got a special treat from Melvin, as his wife, sports anchor Lindsay Czarniak, made an appearance on Today, leading Al Roker to joke that he was the third wheel.
The longtime couple met while working together in Washington, D.C., in the late 2000s and tied the knot in 2011. Melvin and Czarniak share two kids, a son named Delano and a daughter named Sybil.
