Billy Crystal is certain that Harry and Sally would be “still in love” today.

In honor of the recent 35th anniversary of the release of his hit romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally..., Crystal, 76, weighed in on an imagined future for his and Meg Ryan’s iconic characters.

“They'd be talking about downsizing. They’re not ready for assisted living yet,” the presenter quipped to E! Live From the Red Carpet host Laverne Cox at the Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, Sept. 15. “But they're still romantic, still in love.”

Directed by Rob Reiner and written by Nora Ephron, When Harry Met Sally... premiered on July 14, 1989. Crystal and Ryan, 62, starred as the titular characters, whose friendship and romantic feelings intertwine throughout their adult lives. The duo ends up together at the end of the movie, of course — and, per Crystal, would be “keeping it romantic” 35 years later.

“They’re probably having a great time with their grandchildren and finding new ways to be with each other,” he said with a smile.

Of the classic’s continued relevance for that length of time, the actor added, “It’s extraordinary to be part of an evergreen [movie] like that after all these years: Young people finding it, getting called from film schools and 22-year-olds finding the movie, 21-year-olds, and coming to speak to them about it.”

New audiences continue to discover the movie, said Crystal, because of “great directing by” Reiner and the “brilliant script” by Ephron, who died in 2012 at age 71. He also shouted out his costars, Ryan, the late Carrie Fisher and the late Bruno Kirby, saying, “It was a small but powerful group.”

When Harry Met Sally... was among 25 films selected to join the National Film Registry in 2022. Last December, Crystal honored Ryan upon receiving his award at the 46th Kennedy Center Honors. “We were thrown together by [Reiner and Ephron], chosen to be this couple and you never know — almost 35 years later, we’re still a couple to everybody," he told PEOPLE at the time.

"As you get further along and new generations see this movie and feel it and watch it over and over again on Valentine’s Day, on New Year’s Eve, whatever it is," he added. "You know, people fall in love every day, and people fall out of love every day.”

Crystal attended the Emmys before the release of his latest TV project, Before, in which he plays a widowed child psychologist. The series debuts on Apple TV+ on Oct. 25.
