Iconic quiz show Weakest Link is returning to Aussie screens after two short seasons and a 19-year break with a brand-new host at the helm: Kath & Kim star Magda Szubanski.
The reboot will air on Channel Nine and promises 'modern twists' on the original format which was last shown on Channel 7 in 2002.
Comedian and actress Magda is set to pick up where previous host, the delightfully derisive Cornelia Frances left off — and it sounds like she's been flexing her 'mean' muscle in preparation.
“I’ve pretended to be nice my whole career – now I finally get to play myself," she declared in a press release from the network.
"No, I will not be making the contestants look stupid. They’re perfectly capable of doing that themselves."
Fans of Magda and Weakest Link were thrilled with the news and took to Twitter to share their excitement.
"As a lover of trivia based game shows, I approve!" wrote one.
"You’ll be fantastic in this role. I’ll be watching for sure," added another.
"Please host as one of your famous characters each episode. Pleaseeeee we need Sharon to see host an episode!" asked a third in reference to Magda's character on Kath & Kim.
This will be Magda's second TV hosting role after she helmed the short-lived pop culture quiz show The Spearman Experiment for one season back in 2009.
Who used to host Weakest Link?
Magda will be stepping into large shoes left by the late actor Cornelia Frances, who hosted Weakest Link for two short yet memorable seasons from 2001 to 2002.
Cornelia, of course, was best known for her role as the cold and calculating Morag Bellingham on Home and Away and she carried over some of her character's take-no-prisoners attitude to her hosting gig.
Her delivery of the show's iconic line, "You are the Weakest Link. Goodbye." was so delectably stern and scathing that it remains part of the country's lexicon to this day.
Will Magda be able to top it? Only time will tell.
What is Weakest Link about again?
The Weakest Link is a TV quiz show that sees eight contestants attempt to answer general knowledge questions to build chains of correct answers — a wrong answer breaks the chain and forces the group to start over again.
The longer the chain of correct answers, the more prizemoney the contestants collect along the way. At the end of each round, the group votes to eliminate the person they think is the 'weakest link,' which is when the host gets to say those infamous words.
Weakest Link is coming soon to Channel Nine and 9Now.
