Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce earlier this week, but she and Ben Affleck have been broken up for months. In fact, we know the exact day of their split due to J.Lo listing their "official date of separation" in divorce docs: April 26, 2024.
The multi-hyphenate was actually photographed on this day in NYC ahead of the Met Gala, which she attended solo—the first sign that things weren't great between her and Ben:
However, the pair were then spotted holding hands at Violet Affleck's graduation about a month after their breakup on May 31, indicating that perhaps there was still hope for a reconciliation at this time:
Meanwhile in July, a source told the Daily Mail that while the couple were taking time apart (J.Lo was in the Hamptons at the time), they were also writing each other letters in the hopes of reconciling.
“Jen and Ben agreed it is best to take some time apart so they can really figure out what it is that they want," the insider said. "They were ready to throw in the towel. Divorce papers are done and ready to be filed. But they wanted to give it one last go before walking away from this and are going back to the beginning by writing each other letters. This is what made them fall in love in the first place.”
The insider added that Ben and Jen had “a deep love for each other" and just had "to find what got them back together in the first place and there is definitely a chance that three will be a charm when and if that happens, they aren’t throwing in the towel. They are taking it day by day and they don’t want to get divorced.”
Sadly/obviously, their attempt at reconciliation didn't pan out. The couple have yet to make a statement on their split, but J.Lo's divorce filing makes it seem pretttttty definite.
