A visitors guide to Brisbane during Curiocity

Looking for something different to do this weekend? Curiocity Brisbane answers the call!

We’ve pulled together a cheat sheet for the perfect weekend in Brisbane during Curiocity Brisbane. Curiocities are one-of-a-kind installations, pop-ups and interactive spaces crafted by local and international artists and makers on display and free for everyone to explore.

Stay

With so much to see and do during Curiocity Brisbane, you’ll want to be close to the action. Treasury Brisbane in the CBD is the perfect home base.

The Curiocities will be positioned along the Brisbane River from South Bank’s Cultural Precinct to Brisbane Powerhouse and operate both day and night. The Sky Brisbane installation is right in front of the hotel in Queens Park and you’ll be walking distance to Southbank Cultural Forecourt where you’ll find other installations dotted around.

Eat and drink

You’ll need to keep your energy levels up in order to fit in everything in during the festival. Luckily, there are lots of great food options around the area. For breakfast, we recommend The Lab at the Treasury Brisbane. It’s the perfect spot for a chilled out leisurely breakfast to start the day. For lunchtime refuelling, treat yourself to Donna Chang nearby. The modern weekend lunch requires three key things; good company, a tasty menu, and an Instagrammable decor. Donna Chang delivers all three!

When the sun goes down, if you’re still in the area, you have to pop into the coolest underground bar. The Boom Boom Room is heritage-listed space was formerly used as a bank basement, with the old vaults now turned into private rooms. It’s the perfect spot a quiet end of day drink and their new bar menu is a must try.

For a more substantial dinner, make your way to Howard Smith Wharves – Brisbane’s latest dining and entertainment precinct – it’s situated under the iconic Story Bridge on the banks of the Brisbane river. There you’ll be spoiled for choice. If you’re into Greek food, and who isn’t, Greca is a must. It’s a modern Greek taverna that brings the very best of Greek cuisine and has the best view of the river.

See

During the festival, there is a trail of 14+ eye-opening interactive installations called Curiocities (March 15 – April 3). They’re dotted along the Brisbane River from South Bank’s Cultural Precinct to Brisbane Powerhouse. Our favourite installations are SKY Brisbane at Queen’s Gardens Park, Dynamo at QEII Park, Shadowgram and Knowledge Walk at State Library Queensland, Crate Expectations which travels
between QPAC Cultural Forecourt and QLD Museum area and Fibonacci Spiral at River Quay Green, South Bank.

On South Bank, you won’t be short of things to see. You’re a stone’s throw away from Queensland Performing Arts Centre, the Queensland Museum & Sciencentre, the Queensland Art Gallery, the State Library of Queensland, and the particularly outstanding Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA).

Do

If you’re all cultured out, take a break and go shopping on James Street. The tree-lined street has some serious retail and lifestyle hot spots in and around the CBD to appease even the most seasoned shopper. There are a host of stores to suit all budgets, from big brand names to hidden gem boutiques and local independent retailers.

Get out, be curious and explore this weekend! Curiocity Brisbane is on until 3rd April 2019.
