Vegetarian cuisine has come a long way over the years.
No longer does a boring salad come to mind when one thinks about vegetarian food, but rather funky, colourful and fun creations like fish tacos, haloumi burgers and sweet potato fries drizzled with yoghurt.
Luckily, Australia and New Zealand's hospitality scenes have been embracing the meat-free revolution with open arms.
More and more restaurants are including delicious veggie options on their menus and some have even changed their entire menu.
These eight Aussie chefs have jumped onboard the green bandwagon and revealed to Be their go-to vegetarian cafés they recommend you try:
Darren Robertson - Chef and founder of Three Blue Ducks and The Farm
The blonde surfer dude speaks highly of “100 mile table in Byron Bay, a cracking little place run by Sarah Swan who used to work for Neil Perry. Whatever she cooks is always really tasty,” he says.
“I usually eat ‘The Candice’ for breakfast, which is basically the best fried eggs and greens that you'll eat…Very Healthyish.”
Dan Hong - Merivale head chef of Mr. Wong and Ms. Gs
“I would have to say my favourite is Yellow in Potts Point,” says Hong, who isn’t the only chef that’s raved about Bentley's Brent Savage’s all-vegetarian restaurant being absolutely tops.
Andrew McConnell, Kylie Kwong and Sepia’s Martin Benn are a few of Australia’s renowned chefs who have given the green eatery the thumbs up.
Neil Perry - Celebrity chef and co-owner of the Rockpool Group
Who doesn’t love a meat-free Italian indulgence? Perry’s favourite place to carb load with a glass of red in hand is Gigi’s Pizzeria in Newtown. From mushroom and blue cheese pizzas to puffy wood-fired pumpkin calzones - Gig’s is the perfect place for vegetarians to satisfy their rainbow food cravings.
Sean Connolly - Head chef at The Morrison
Connolly’s favourite veggo café is “Little Bird Unbakery in Auckland, New Zealand. Super veggo, raw food…. Amazing,” he says.
Giovanni Pilu - Head chef and owner of Pilu at Freshwater
The Italian chef’s go-to veggo cafe is the unassuming and homey Northern Beaches eatery, Emilia's in Curl Curl.
Michael Rantissi – Chef and owner of Kepos & Co and Kepos Street Kitchen
Rantissi raves about his very own Kepos Street Kitchen having “some great vegetarian dishes!”
From smoked ocean trout salad to zucchini and goat cheese fritters, the Middle Eastern-inspired Waterloo cafe has enough veggie options on the menu to keep you coming back days in a row.
Monty Koludrovic - Head chef at Bondi Icebergs
The sustainable food van, Veggie Patch Diner is Bondi chef Koludrovic’s number one place to get a nutrient fix. “The falafels are a killer!” he says. We don’t doubt that for a moment.
Perry Fuller – Head chef at Sake, Brisbane
For someone who sticks by lean Japanese cuisine, it’s surprising to hear that Sake Brisbane’s head chef, Fuller, “loves cheap and cheerful vegetarian Indian restaurants.” And who could blame him! Nothing beats a melt-in-your-mouth garlic naan dipped in Dhal. Yum!
