UK retailers have released their Christmas adverts for 2018

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Yep, that’s right. Christmas has, once again, crept upon us making us all say, “Where on earth has this year gone?!”

This time of year also marks when big retailers release Christmas adverts, some of the most highly anticipated ones are from big UK corporations like John Lewis, Sainsbury’s and Aldi.

To get you all – and ourselves – in the Christmas spirit, we’ve decided to round up a few of the best Christmas adverts for 2018.

John Lewis

John Lewis is definitely the retailer which changed the game when it came to Christmas advertising, with their 2013 animated commercial ‘The Bear & The Hare’. The animation was accompanied by Lily Allen’s ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ Keane cover, which pulled the whole ad together to be the ultimate tear-jerker.

This year John Lewis had superstar singer Elton John star in what can be deemed an extremely nostalgic advert. The clip showcases the British singer in present day singing his hit ‘Your Song’, and takes you back in time to key moments from his life.

The last clip show a young Elton on Christmas day playing a piano for the first time. It definitely tugs at the heart strings.

Sainsbury’s

This year UK supermarket Sainsbury’s pulled out the big guns, hiring The Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey for their advert – and it seems to have worked.

It follows the story of a young girl about to take to the stage in her school Christmas play, dressed as a star. The young girl is clearly nervous, but eventually overcomes it to deliver a stellar performance – in true festive fashion.

Aldi

Aldi is a brand we all know and love here in Australia, and the budget supermarket giant is just as popular in the United Kingdom.

This year marks the return of the adventures of Kevin the carrot, who goes up against an evil parsnip. Luckily, Kevin prevails against the parsnip, and frees his fellow family of carrots in the cage the vegetable had Kevin’s family locked up in.

Mark’s & Spencer Food

Mark’s and Spencer, a favourite for many foodies in the UK, released a feel-good family-style advert this year.

Different people with their friends and family are shown trying to decide their favourtie Christmas foods from mince pies, to turkey, to brussel sprouts (yeah we’re not too sure about that one either) to christmas pudding – so much good food!

Cadbury

Playing on the ‘Secret Santa’ concept – also known as Kris Kringle here Down Under – Cadbury has brought back the notion simple gifts of chocolate are just as good as extravagant presents.

In the advert, the viewer sees many characters wearing a Santa mask to deliver their chocolate gifts discreetly. A feel good and cheery commercial to get you in the festive spirit.

Iceland

In a bold move, Iceland have decided to go in a totally different direction to many other competitors and steer clear of the fluffy, sweet Christmas story angle.

Instead, the bargain supermarket has shed light on its commitment to removing palm oil – a substance which is severely harming the environment – from products they produce.

The advert shows an endangered orangutan destroying a little girl’s bedroom, but the underlying message is the monkey was forced into the child’s bedroom due to his forest home being destroyed.

Heathrow Airport

Another year, another airport advert for London Heathrow and 2018 sees the return of the teddy bear couple again – Edward and Doris Bair.

To begin with they’re in sunny Florida in a retirement village, but after getting homesick, they stick they’re winter best on and head to the airport to jump on a plane.

They’re reunited with their family in the comfort of home, giving the message there really is no place like home at Christmas.
