Tyler Perry's new series 'Beauty in Black' is topping the charts on Netflix
Tyler Perry's rise to Hollywood fame began in 2005 with the premiere of Diary of a Mad Black Woman.
While Perry has since become a prolific actor, writer, director and producer with a net worth of roughly $1.4 billion, per Forbes, he will forever be known as the man who created (and portrayed) Mabel "Madea" Simmons — a brutally honest, rambunctious grandmother. To date, Perry has played Madea in 12 films.
The filmmaker has toyed with the idea of hanging up the iconic character's wig and wardrobe, but he eventually decided to keep Madea around because the American people "need to laugh," as he said on his Instagram in 2021. Fans can expect film No. 13, Madea's Destination Wedding, to premiere on Netflix in 2025.

Diary of a Mad Black Woman
Originally written as a stage play, Diary of a Mad Black Woman marked the start of Perry's film franchise featuring Madea. The 2005 flick follows Helen (Kimberly Elise) who moves in with her grandmother Madea (Perry) after her rich husband Charles (Steve Harris) leaves her for another woman.
Madea helps Helen heal her broken heart — and get a bit of revenge on Charles.

Good Deeds
Perry doesn't always play a comedic grandmother. In 2012's Good Deeds, he portrays a businessman named Wesley Deeds who seems to have it all — a thriving business, generational wealth and a beautiful fiancée, Natalie (Gabrielle Union).
But everything in his life begins to shift when he meets the woman cleaning his office building, Lindsey Wakefield (Thandiwe Newton), a struggling mother whom he helps get back on her feet.
A Fall from Grace
Every woman has a breaking point, and Grace (Crystal Fox) reaches hers in 2020's A Fall from Grace after she marries a con man named Shannon (Mehcad Brooks). When Grace finds her husband in bed with another woman, rage takes over and she's indicted for Shannon's murder after beating him with a baseball bat.
There's just one problem: the body was never found. Rookie public defender Jasmine (Bresha Webb) is assigned Grace's case and it's up to her to uncover the truth.

A Madea Homecoming
In 2022's A Madea Homecoming, Perry reprises his role as Madea for the 12th time and there's no shortage of laughs when the elderly woman hosts her great-grandson Davi's college graduation party.
The event attracts a slew of quirky family members and drama erupts, especially after Davi's great-aunt Agnes Brown (Brendan O'Carroll) shows up.

A Jazzman’s Blues
Perry takes viewers back in time to Georgia in the 1930s and '40s with A Jazzman's Blues. The 2022 film is reminiscent of The Notebook as it follows Bayou (Joshua Boone) and Leanne (Solea Pfeiffer) who are forbidden to be together.
After Bayou proposes marriage, Leanne is forced to move to Boston with her family. She eventually marries a white man for status but continues to pine for Bayou.

Mea Culpa
Kelly Rowland and Trevante Rhodes are almost too hot to handle in Mea Culpa. The 2024 film follows criminal defense attorney Mea (Rowland) as she takes on a new client — artist Zyair (Rhodes) who is accused of murdering his girlfriend.
Zyair seduces Mea, who is unhappy in her marriage, and things get steamy between the pair.
Beauty in Black
Perry's latest project, Beauty in Black, premiered in October 2024. The eight-episode TV series tells the story of Kimmie (Taylor Polidore Williams), a stripper whose life takes a turn when she crosses paths with a wealthy family behind a cosmetics dynasty and a sex trafficking scheme.
The cast is stacked with long-time actors, including Richard Lawson, Debbi Morgan and Ricco Ross.
