Twin steals the limelight on sister's wedding by getting engaged

For many brides, having spent many months and sometimes years, arduous planning their big day, it would take a brave person to dare to ruin or upstage them.

But a twin has done just that, steeling the limelight on her sister’s wedding after she got engaged shortly after the ceremony.

Jacqueline Longman, 34, from Yorkshire, UK, had just walked down the aisle and exchanged vows with husband Phil, when her twin’s partner dropped to one knee to pop the question.

But while most brides would be upset over being upstaged, thankfully Jacqueline had actually helped to concoct the plan with Chris, 31, her future brother in law.

“Some people found it odd and couldn’t believe I would let Chris propose on my wedding day, and thought it would ruin it, but for me I thought it was brilliant,” Jacqueline said.

“While it is a little strange, we are ridiculously close, we’re are not the same person but we do and have done everything together.”

After being told that future brother-in-law Chris was planning to propose, the couple even suggested he should do it on their wedding day.

“He wanted to do it after me and my husband’s first dance, and I was going to give my bouquet to Gemma,” she said.

“But we thought it could go wrong if someone else caught it accidentally, there were a lot of ideas but the best one was waiting for them to have a photograph together.

“My husband was stressed on the morning of our wedding trying to calm Chris down while getting himself ready.

“I did think at one point, if she says no it will ruin my wedding day, but I knew deep down she wouldn’t and thank god I was right.”

Jacqueline helped him work out the best way to pop the question and ensured the wedding guests were surrounding the pair at that very moment.

While having a couple’s photo shortly after the ceremony, gobsmacked Gemma Holden at first didn’t realise her partner was proposing and couldn’t believe what he had done.

“We got on the bridge and were just having a photo, or so I thought, and Chris kept trying to talk to me,” Gemma said.

“He was annoying me, because I just wanted to get the photo over, so I told him ‘Not now’ and then when he just dropped to one knee I felt really bad.

“When I realised what was going on it felt amazing, I couldn’t believe it and was just shocked. It was a big crowd and great.”

Delighted, she exclaimed ‘Yes’ but later feared her sister could be annoyed that she ‘stole the limelight’.

“Once it calmed down I spoke to Jacqueline to see if she was ok about it and then I found out they were all in on it,” she said.

“My sister is a good liar, the whole family were in on it too, I couldn’t believe every guest knew not me.

“I was surprised they all kept it secret, especially Jacqueline because we tell each other everything and I can normally tell when she’s hiding something. She played an absolute blinder.”

Jacqueline admits she was happy to escape the limelight for a bit, and now they joke that Gemma ‘upstaged’ her on her big day.

Now the married pair, who recently celebrated their first wedding anniversary, are helping Gemma and Chris to plan a big day of their very own.

They are so close they even initially tried to tie the knot on the same day.

“I keep saying to her that I can’t wait for her wedding day, so I can surprise her,” Jacqueline said.

“We’ll think of something bigger and better to pay her back.”
