Toothpaste tubes now recyclable in Somerset
Toothpaste tubes can now be recycled in kerbside recycling collections in Somerset.
It is one of the first areas to launch the service after more brands have simplified their packaging to a single plastic tube.
Adam Herriot is from WRAP, a non-government organisation on recycling, said: "Somerset is leading the way for recycling empty toothpaste tubes.
"The packaging changing is relatively new and we're encouraging more local authorities to make the change."
Mr Herriott continued: "The toothpaste tubes used to be made out many multi-plastics which made it harder to recycle.
"Now they're just made out of one single plastic, which makes them recyclable.
"Most toothpaste packaging brands are now accepted but do check the label before recycling them."
Somerset Council asked residents to squeeze as much toothpaste as you can out of the tube and simply place in your weekly blue recycling bin bag.
Councillor Richard Wilkins, Liberal Democrat lead member for transport and waste services at Somerset Council, said: "It's great that our post about this announcement picked up lots of traction on social media.
"Our residents really get recycling in Somerset and that's why we're in the top 20% for recycling in the UK."
