Yahoo Lifestyle Tom Brady Added a Platinum Cartier Crash to His Bonkers Watch Collection
Tom Brady scored another horological touchdown at this year’s Laureus World Sports Awards.
The retired NFL legend wore a coveted Cartier Crash to present tennis star Novak Djokovic with the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award at the Galería De Cristal in Madrid on Monday evening. Released in 2023, the modern reference (CRWGCH0050) takes design cues from the 1960s original but showcases a flashy new platinum case and an updated movement.

First unveiled in 1967, the Crash is rumored to have been inspired by a broken timepiece that arrived at Cartier London for repair following a car accident. Designed by Jean-Jacques Cartier and Rupert Emerson, the watch was also a nod to the surrealist works of Salvador Dalí and the daring spirit of the Swinging Sixties in London. Most original models were made of 18-karat yellow gold, though Cartier produced some examples in other metals in the ‘80s and ‘90s. The Parisian jeweler also released a Crash in 2019, but it was only available in yellow gold. As such, platinum editions like Brady’s are highly sought-after.
Platinum gives the case a contemporary feel while rendering it durable and scratch-resistant. The gray calfskin strap complements the cool tones of the metal while contrasting the clean white dial and ruby cabochon on the crown. The dial itself echoes the original, with stretched Roman numerals and blued steel hands. Inside lies the in-house caliber 1917 MC. The hand-wound movement provides a power reserve of 38 hours.
Adding to the exclusivity, this reference is only sold in the London boutique on New Bond Street, where the Crash was born over 50 years ago. The watch even features a special engraving of the building on the caseback. The piece retailed at £43,000 (roughly $53,500) at the time of release—a drop in the bucket for Brady. The seven-time Super Bowl champ has spent some serious cash on his collection, shelling out for vintage Rolex Daytonas, six-figure Richard Milles, and holy grail Pateks.
Djokovic is also a noted watch collector. The Serbian tennis player, who is currently first in the ATP rankings, became an Audemars Piguet brand ambassador in 2011, signed with Seiko three years later, and then joined the Hublot roster in 2021. He wore a diamond-encrusted titanium Big Bang to accept his award from Brady on Monday. Djokovic scored a horological touchdown too, then.
