Weekend Today show hosts Alison Langdon and Jayne Azzopardi have been caught in a heated exchange during an interview with infamous US fraudster Jordan Belfort, also known as the Wolf of Wall Street.

The cringeworthy segment, which aired on Sunday morning, saw Jordan, who spent 22 months in prison for money laundering and fraud, hit out at the hosts calling them ‘clueless’ and claimed they were ‘lying’.

Jordan, was the inspiration behind the 2013 film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, was introduced as the ‘billionaire businessman turned criminal’, before Jane asked Jordan what he was doing now ‘to redeem himself’.

After talking about his work now as a motivational speaker focusing on “entrepreneurship” he lashed out at hosts for bringing up his time in prison.

“You’re making it sound like I just walked out of jail yesterday, after doing this 30 years ago, it’s a little dated in your kind of perspective here,” he said.

And things only got worse from there.

Both Alison and Jane asked whether his teachings were now “ethical” given his past crimes, a question he simply brushed aside.

“You are a thief. You went to jail for it. You defrauded victims of $220 million that we know of. What else are you?” Alison put it to him straight.

His response was simply: “It was 30 years ago and I have certainly redeemed myself many times over. I find it shocking and sad.”

“You are lying right now,” he continued visibly uncomfortable. “You are completely fabricating a story that is not grounded in reality. It's just not.”

The former stockbroker's scams cost investors more than A$296 million (US$200 million), which he claimed had all be paid back in the six-minute interview.

It ended with one parting shot at the hosts from Jordan.

“You have no idea what you are talking about. You are clueless,” was his goodbye.

“I love Australia. Australians are wonderful. You personally are clueless though.”
